Social Media Stat of the Month – You Better be Blogging!
According to blog-hosting titan, Wordpress, over 400 million people view more than 22.3 billion blog pages each month. On Wordpress alone, users produce approximately 76 million new posts on a monthly basis! What makes blogging so popular? Well, it’s a cost-effective way for brands to integrate substantial self-owned content into marketing campaigns.
Perhaps you have a company blog already and you’re churning out posts on a recurring basis that bring high-volume digital traffic to your website. If so, great! If you have a blog that you are not updating regularly or maybe you aren’t blogging at all, here are some easy-to-follow tips to get started:
Settle on a Schedule
The first step to blogging consistently is determining a schedule that best fits your life’s routine and your business’s demands. Maybe one or two per month? Once per week? Either way, select a schedule that you can adhere to. This will allow you to set time aside in advance to write your blog posts and will hold you accountable to your blogging goals.
Identify a Few Topics or Areas of Interest
Blogging doesn’t have to be a freeform stream of consciousness. Rather, defining a set of content categories will help you generate ideas. For example, if you are writing a blog for a clothing boutique, you could start by producing content that falls into these four categories: previews of new clothing arrivals, previews of new accessory arrivals, seasonal style tips, and general fashion advice. You can then rotate your posts to match these categories and will find that there will be a sense of cohesion to your content.
Using visuals in your blog posts will help add visual depth and context to your content. If you are blogging about new clothing arrivals at your fashion boutique, you will want to show pictures so your customers can see the items you are describing. Reading about a piece of clothing will not interest your potential buyer as much as it would with a picture to accompany the text.
If you’re blogging, you’re going to want readers! Share links to your newest blog post on your company’s social media accounts so that your audience members will know that you’ve just published new content to your blog. This will help drive traffic to your most recent piece of content, and it will entice people to visit your business’s website to read what you wrote.
Say "No" to the Soapbox
Blogging on behalf of your brand or organization implies that you are writing as a representative of something greater than yourself. Thus, do not treat your business blog like a personal one. Your readers want to learn interesting information about your company, so remember to keep it professional.
