Social Media Stat of the Month: the Older You Get, the More You Engage with Brands
So, only hip, young millennials engage with businesses over social media, right? Well, according to Social Media Today, that’s just one big myth.
How do businesses gain the most exposure through using social media platforms? Having a large following helps, but your content has to be shared by the masses across multiple channels to truly obtain viral status.
An infographic provided by Social Media Today via Po.st showed that the majority of content sharing occurs over Facebook and Twitter. Another surprising factoid is that more than 72% of all sharing occurs between 7-10 p.m. via copying and pasting linked content into one’s own status update.
However, perhaps the most important data we can gather from this infographic is that social media users ages 55-64 are 22% more likely to share branded content than millennials! The baby boomers, regardless of gender, have a 41% sharing rate when it comes to brand-sponsored content, as compared to millennials at 19%.
What does this mean for businesses and brand development? This information serves as a reminder to brands to craft social messages that have potential to appeal to multiple age groups. The more you tailor your messages to reach more demographics, the greater the potential you have to grow your audience.
Don’t discount your parents’ Facebook friends - they might end up being the ones who share your content the most!
